Cannaregio and the ancient Jewish Ghetto

Cannaregio is one of Venice’s most fascinating districts. Characterised by its long, wide canals, Cannaregio, which in the past was the home to most of venetian painters, is still home to lively neighbourhoods. On your walking tour, you will discover how Venice, as an emporium of international trade, became extraordinarily cosmopolitan and home to people hailing from near and far. You will visit the area where the Jewish community lived for centuries: in fact in 1516, on an islet formerly occupied by iron-foundries, the first Jewish Ghetto was established. Venice’s Ghetto would become home to Jewish settlers from Germany, from the Iberian peninsula and even from the Ottoman Empire. Memorials in the Ghetto commemorate how the recent Shoah devastated Venice’s Jewish community.
Here I will uncover hidden artistic gems and reveal lesser-known architectural monuments, such as the Madonna dell’Orto and the church of the Gesuits and the treasures they preserve inside.
This is a three-hours tour.
